Perhaps this is some sort of internalised ableism but I used to have this internal dialogue where I’d reflect on how difficult it was to do “boring” things and a straw man NT person would sarcastically imply that “it must be nice” to have an excuse to get out of “boring” tasks.
Um, fucking no. If you think about it for like two seconds, you realise how much of being a happy, independent and healthy adult relies on being able to complete tasks that aren’t immediately captivating. Those tasks still need doing, I don’t want someone else to do them for me. You’re left with either waiting on when the ‘inspiration’ strikes you, having to improvise some game or arbitrary reward structure just to clean two dishes or you just rawdog your way through the task and you feel every second of the boredom and come out the other side feeling worse than when you started because no satisfaction from completing the task can pay-back the effort you put into completing it.
That’s why ADHD adults burn-out. Without medication, every day you end with a ‘motivation deficit’ where no satisfaction from completing tasks can cover the costs of the determination and focus one spent to start those tasks. Eventually you just ‘default’ and you can’t do anything any more.
Stimulants to me feel like a small loan on every task. It’s a fine balance but they actually let me come out of tasks semi-regularly with more energy/motivation than I started. And when you have a surplus, productivity begets productivity.
Sweet Caroline. No question.

Really excited to hear what you think.
Oh, I know. I adore Haskell.
Mate, I came on here to post Haskell as a semi-ironic ‘joke’ and it’s included in the top comment. You’ve made my day.
I’m delighted to hear that I’m not alone 😅
My apologies. I can’t say I’ve done this a lot, as I’ve always been concerned this was the case. I’ve made the necessary adjustments.
Please Do Not Go by Violent Femmes.
Have you not seen how big number can be? Number can just get so big. I don’t even care that I’m ADHD and I’m playing into all the worst stereotypes about us:
NUMBER GETS BIG
I’m fairly sure it was Scientific Linux because that was the distro used in the labs of my first programming course.
At some point soon you’re going to solve it in front of someone whilst you’re fidgeting, not even really focussing on it and you’ll blow their freaking mind and you’ll feel great.
Remember the GM of a TTRPG session I was playing was running a session and he noticed I’d been solving it when he’d assumed I’d just been fidgeting. He literally interrupted the session to exclaim ‘Oh my God, you solved it!’ and it took me a good few seconds to realize what he was talking about, as my attention was primarily on what he was saying and I was just idly solving.
Enjoy it when it comes :)
ADHD here. Speedcubing. It’s a wonderful hobby for me. When I’m interested in it, I can learn some new things and time myself to see how I’m doing. When I’m not interested in it, I can solve it and it helps me to focus on watching TV. Even if I’m not solving it, it feels great just to twist in your hands.
Look up a good budget speedcube (not Rubik’s branded) and invest yourself as much or as little as you fancy.
Some of us aren’t as husky as we would like to be; others are trying to be less husky. Presumably some of us are happy with ourselves, though I’m yet to meet them 😅
Jokes aside, we are all lovely people who just want to sit you down, make you a cup of tea, and convince you that good code does nothing and object-oriented programming is evil 😉
Haskellers for Haskell.
Truth or Consequences, NM
Heard it on a true crime podcast once and obviously I had to look up how it got its name and now it’s just stuck.
EDIT: Missed the never travelled to qualifier. I’ve been to California twice and NYC once. Only heard of Truth or Consequences after my travels.
An Ethicurean. I genuinely believe it’s the perfect cocktail but I’ve only ever come across it in a single bar in all my life.
Programmer chuds get bent out of shape that HTML is the single most influential programming language ever made. Think about it, Devs post code snippets to StackOverflow, rendered in HTML. An HTML-interpreter (aka a ‘Software Engineer’) copy pastes the snippet, transpiles it into a Python file, Java file etc. and later in the process you get a binary.
Basic Brogrammers rage against programming behemoth HTML out of bitterness that all they are is HTML’s compiler.
Right, so, you won’t believe me but I totally thought the vocalist could be Waylon but then I just figured that they’d gone for someone local to sing it and it was a bit sheltered of me to assume that Waylon’s actor was the only one with that accent 😅
Thanks for confirming.
