  • Yeah, GoGo need to improve their Linux support since at the moment they seem to just “go along with it” without putting any effort into it

That said, with stuff like Lutris (can only speak of that since I never used Heroic) which can use GoG’s API to access your account and download games and has GoG-specific install scripts, it’s also a reasonably seamless experience to game in Linux from GoG and none of it is tied to a proprietary vendor solution like Steam + Proton, so it’s a lot more flexible and friendly for those who want to do their own tweaking - for example all my games in Lutris run sandboxed using firejail for extra security and blocking network access, but I can’t do that for Steam.

GoG is pretty much a totally open solution (you need not use their API and can just download an offline installer and install it however you see fit) whilst Steam is tracking and controlling your installs, game launching and in some cases game playing, so that means gaming with Steam is much more tightly coupled to both their code and their servers and thus Steam is always going to be more ill-fitted to the traditional hacker ethos in Linux than GoG.

Finally, keep in mind that Steam’s enhanced Linux support is just a natural consequence of their strategy of trying to protect themselves from any Microsoft funny business with Windows by creating their own Windows-independent ecosystem, with Linux being a natural shortcut to do so cheaply.

  • Funilly enough as somebody who has been using the Internet since being a working class teen in a poor European nation in the early 90s and thus knowing all about pirating, GoG is what made me stop pirating games (and even after they came up with GoG Galaxy I still kept downloading offline installers, plus my purchases in Steam have always been pretty limited in comparison to those in GoG exactly because in Steam my access to install a game can be removed at any time) whilst things like Netflix never stopped my pirating of Movies and TV-Series exactly because it was a streaming service which I would have to pay forever to maintain access to the Films and Series I liked rather than a Film and Series store were I could buy to keep (and, adding to this, during the peak period of VHS tapes and DVDs I actually did buy a lot of physical media).

Anecdotal, I know, but it’s funny that my behaviour over the years almost perfect matches what you describe.

  • I would also add that one of the best experiences one can have is to have to maintain one’s own code - coming back 6 months or a year later (long enough to have forgotten the details of it) to the code one has made to add new features is quite the eye opener and a serious incentive for improving the quality of one’s coding because now you’re being burned from all the stupid lazy choices if your past self and also spotting things you did not know were important and whose full impact you were not aware of.

I’ve crossed paths with people who for one reason or another only ever did brand new programs from the ground up and their code tends to be messy, hard to understand and prone to break in unexpected ways and places when people try to add or change features in it.

  • I’m not making an argument against it, just clarifying were it sits as technology.

As I see it, it’s like electric cars - a technology that was overtaken by something else in the early days when that domain was starting even though it was the first to come out (the first cars were electric and the ICE engine was invented later) and which has now a chance to be successful again because many other things have changed in the meanwhile and we’re a lot closes to the limits of the tech that did got widely adopted back in the early days.

It actually makes a lot of sense to improve the speed of what programming can do by getting it to be capable of also work outside the step-by-step instruction execution straight-jacked which is the CPU/GPU clock.

  • FPGAs have been a thing for ages.

If I remember it correctly (I learned this stuff 3 decades ago) they were basically an improvement on logic circuits without clocks (think stuff like NAND and XOR gates - digital signals just go in and the result comes out on the other side with no delay beyond that caused by analog elements such as parasitical inductances and capacitances, so without waiting for a clock transition).

The thing is, back then clocking of digital circuits really took off (because it’s WAY simpler to have things done one stage at a time with a clock synchronizing when results are read from one stage and sent to the next stage, since different gates have different delays and so making sure results are only read after the slowest path is done is complicated) so all CPU and GPU architecture nowadays are based on having a clock, with clock transitions dictating things like when is each step of processing a CPU/GPU instruction started.

Circuits without clocks have the capability of being way faster than circuits with clocks if you can manage the problem of different digital elements having different delays in producing results I think what we’re seeing here is a revival of using circuits without clocks (or at least with blocks of logic done between clock transitions which are much longer and more complex than the processing of a single GPU instruction).

  • Making generalized statements about ideas held and behaviours on all people born in a certain geographical location or with certain skin color is Racial Prejudice because it’s anchored on the idea that people born in a certain area or with the genes to express a certain skin color “Are all the same”, which is pure Prejudice (you’re presuming belifs and actions for a large number of individual human beings based on how they look and were the were born, both things they were born with and thus not of their choice and none of which things that they actually chose and did)

Racism is equally Racism for all geographical locations or skin colors being targetted and only a Racist would think that it’s less bad to target some skin colors or geographical locations than others.

  • Edit: In response to a private message I sent. The mod apologized, and unbanned me. (Lets just say that from his response, the point that the previous poster is making and in part I make below - that people are almost gloating with “see what not voting Democrat made happen” - probably matches very well how people are being perceived by that mod).

    Original text of my post:

That specific Mod is going way beyond merelly stopping people coming over there to almost gloat that “you’re screwed and it’s all your fault”: I just got banned even though I mostly agree with their criticism of Democrats and the Biden Administration (In summary: had the DNC listenned to anti-Genocide voters, Trump would’ve lost, IMHO, so don’t blame voters for not being able to hold their noses to vote for the lesser of Genociders when the DNC knowingly chose to keep on supporting Genocide against both Principle and their own chances at defeating Trump), but some guy was being all racist about it (claiming it’s all a “Westerners” thing) and I challenged just that, very explicitly and ended up banned.

I would like to think that people who are against Racism as a matter of Principle are naturally against Zionism (an extreme Racist ideology), the Israeli Occupation and even more against the Israeli Genocide, just as they are against all manner of prejudiced takes, so for that Mod to side with a Racist and silence somebody calling that person out in their Racism is something else than “merelly” fighting back against people going to a forum about Palestine to try to score political points in the American political environment using the mass murder of Palestinians.

  • Edit: In response to a private message I sent. The mod apologized, and unbanned me. I’m leaving up what I wrote since, well, I did wrote it and I’m not going to pretend I didn’t.

    Original text of my post:

I just got banned from there for 3 days because I pointed out a guy was being a Racist by going on and on about how “Westerners” this and “Westerners” that (i.e. being prejudiced about everybody born in a certain area), even though I very explictly agreed with most of his points on the quality of the points themselves and generally agree that what the Biden administration did and what Israel has been doing is unnacceptable.

Same mod doing the banning as you see above. I’m genuinelly wondering if this mod account hasn’t been hacked and is now being run from Tel Aviv since it’s a far smarter Psy Ops strategy upon capturing such an account to start antagonizing neutrals and even supporters of the Palestinian cause than to merelly close the forum (since a new similar forum would quickly be openned elsewhere) - it makes sense for a Counter-Propaganda op to poison the well.

  • Acting techniques improved massively during the XXth century, so stuff that relies on that (basically anything but slapstick Comedy and mindless Action) will feel less believable, which impacts mostly things from the 60s and earlier.

Then there are the Production values: the scenarios in early XXth century films were basically Theatre stages whilst more recent stuff can be incredibly realistic (pay attention to the details in things like clothing and the objects and furniture in indoor scenes in period movies) and Sci-Fi benefited massive from the early XXIst century techniques for physically correct 3D rendering and Mocap techniques so there is a disjunction in perceived realism between even the early Star Wars Movies and something like The Mandalorian.

  • Method Acting (which is a pretty powerful Acting technique for getting actors to genuinely feel the emotions of the character) dates back to the 60s in Movies (it dates back even longer to Stanislavski in 19th century Russia, but its popularity really took off mid 20th century) so before that actors were just faking it whilst after that it will be more and more them reacting genuinely to imaginary circumstances (in terms of the audience it means we will actually empathise with what’s hapenning to the character because the emotions on display are genuine).

So the quality of the acting in the kind of Films that are now coming into the Public Domain will be lower than what we are use to (though in stuff like Comedy and certain kinds of Action it’s seldom noticeable).

And this is before we even go into the quality of the Production (in audience terms, how believable are the scenarios).

I doubt Hollywood will be threatened by this for at leat a couple of decades.
