My last job did this. They offered more for those who had worked there longer. People with over 15 years got about a years pay and they all took it. People who had been there under a year got nothing so they all stayed.
I was going to take then they withdrew the offer for all devs. I think a lot tried to take it and they realised no one would be left. I would have got 3-4 months pay. Loads of institutional knowledge lost though, i left anyway a few months later.
Since before bitcoin we’ve had Faster Payments in UK. I can transfer money directly to anyone else’s bank account and it’s effectively instant. It’s also free. Venmo and cashapp don’t serve a purpose here.

I love this about Nix. Had a case this year where I’d hit a bug in the upstream, I fixed it and submitted a PR but then could reference that PR directly for the patch file until a new release finally made it out.
My work laptop is a dell xps and it’s the same, 3 USB c and that’s it. One gets used for charging. It came with a c to HDMI and A adapter. Basically forces you to need a dock at the desk and carry a bunch of adapters for anywhere else. Even just 1 type A for the mouse receiver would be nice because logitech still don’t make type C receivers.
100%. Took me a good year to learn it well enough to be confident with what I was doing but I’ve now got it on everything with a single flake for all my hosts. I love that my user profile is configured the same everywhere. I can add a new tool or config or alias or whatever and it’s the same on every computer.
I’ve now written a module to define all the services I self host and from that it generates both nginx config and DNS config on different hosts.
The main advantage for me though is I only have to solve problems once. Once it’s there in the config I’m confident it’s solved and I won’t need to worry about it again. My previous server was 10 years old and there was stuff configured I’d long forgotten about how it worked or even why I did it.
Yeah I’ll willing to give them the benefit of the doubt on this one. Could very easily believe that a dev added the reference without realising the implications and they fixed it very quickly. Will be watching for any future attempts though.
It is my understanding that the only difference applies to hosted software. For example, Lemmy is AGPL. If it were GPL, then a company could take the source code, modify it and host their own version without open sourcing their modifications. AGPL extends to freedoms of GPL to users of hosted software as well.
A real example of this would be truth social which is modified Mastodon and as AGPL those modifications are required to be open source as well.
it can barely get single functions correct but we’re supposed to believe it can write entire systems from a single prompt? Either way our job at the moment is writing instructions for another piece of software (compiler) to turn into the code. This just adds another level of abstraction. High level programming languages already let us do more with fewer staff. It didn’t make coders redundant, it let to even more software.

I use restic but I switched from Borg because of the cloud features. Outside of that, there’s not a lot of differences really. If you’re happy with Borg keep with it.

I use audible, then download with audible-cli and decrypt with ffmpeg.

The law doesn’t actually mention cookies at all. Its about tracking users, they need your explicit consent to track you or to share data about you with third parties. Cookies are the primary way of doing this but there are others and they need your consent too.
You’ve never worked in finance then. All our systems at work do nothing but move large amounts of txt files around.
That said, many of our clients still don’t support utf-8 so its all ascii and non-latin alphabets are screwed. They can’t even handle characters 128-255 so even stuff like £ is unsupported.

For me though a VPS is still self hosting because you own your applications data and have control over it.
You’re less beholden to the whims of a company to change the software or cut you off. With appropriate backups you should be able to move to a new cloud provider fairly easily.
Maybe that’s normal in US but it’s way overpriced in UK. They want £75/mo and I’m paying £35 for 500Mb in a rural area and there’s several different providers to choose from. My sister is even more remote than me and they’re getting fibre this week.
I could also get unlimited 4G for about £20.
