Imagine being 6 years old and your mother hugging you while crying. You have no electricity. It’s night time. Artillery shell explosions followed by the crumbling buildings and injured crying in pain are the only break you get from your mother’s sounds of sobbing. They’re destroying your entire block, but what you feel is terror. You can look out a window and see flashes. You don’t even know what politics or weapons of mass destruction. You’re just there scared until you die. You wonder what you did for this to happen. Now imagine hundreds of that same experience per night.

That never makes it into the news. I would love to see people’s responses. Show the child and mother live. Then, people are randomly asked, “Push button to kill this person immediately or you will be put in jail and shamed for life.” Let’s see how they react to that guilt for eternity.

There’s a quote from Game of Thrones that I think of often. The setting is that 3 brutal high-class leaders have to decide which one of them will die as punishment. They start getting nervous, so Tyrion says:

It always seems a bit abstract, doesn’t it, other people dying?

I find it validating.

They could potentially fix it for even cheaper by repairing the piece:

1. take the piece off
2. let it dry out
3. find the break in the seal
4. use an adhesive to reseal the break
5. install the piece back on the car

It’s a little more effort and time without the working light, but it might be helpful depending on @nieceandtows@lemmy.world’s financial situation.

Pro tip: Cheap ass beer. It’s filling. It will kill your hunger at night so you only have to eat a little before you pass out. The next morning, the hang over will prevent your intake further. It serves as cheap entertainment so you don’t have to go anywhere and spent $20 to be disappointed. All the alcohol and lack of macro-nutrients will deteriorate your muscles, so your basal metabolic rate will decrease, thus requiring less food. I’m surprised public service announcements don’t promote this diet more often.

I’ve been there with the disillusionment. It felt like everything I had heard about the US was complete bs. I was really upset with the education I had received and started learning a lot about other countries that had been villainized in American culture because I had felt lied to and wondered what the truth was. I think it is valid to do so when we realize that. I also think that criticizing our government is one of most important duties of every American. It’s one of the founding principles. In fact, whenever I am in Washington DC, I make sure to go flick off the the Capitol. I even take pictures.

However, I think it’s disingenuous and unhelpful to only criticize the US, both government and people. The US has done helpful things, regardless of supposed intention. The impact of policies and behaviors are the same. Additionally, something that is only criticized ultimately has no option but to not care about its impact on other and be solely selfish. Otherwise, I can only cease existing because there’s no option to improve and be welcomed. Personally, I think a more helpful approach to concerns with the US would be to also celebrate what it does right. This allows for it to correct itself and aim to be a more just and enjoyable country. It also allows for unity and growth with Western countries at a time when it looks the world is headed for a war between major powers. Hate the US all you want, while Russia has its positive as most countries do, it is my opinion that it is magnitudes worse of a county to live in many areas of life, from government oppression to economic hardships. On the positive side, it does seem to have an interesting history, unique problem-solving approaches, strong patriotism, valuable contributions to science, and outstanding artistic capacity.

I think she’s hot too, but given her emotional disposition, being romantic seems like inadequate timing and creepy. Something feels off about that. It reminds me of Will Ferrell’s character in Wedding Crashers where he picks up women at funerals. It would probably be a more helpful idea to allow her to recover before coming in with those intentions at the least.

Smart observation! While it doesn’t give a precise location (~300 miles), that info can still be dangerous to certain people. A state agency with a history of going after activists and journalists (eg North Korea & Saudi Arabia) could use that info to know where to focus efforts if not at least somewhat confirm their target’s location found through other means. If anything, they could at the least find out what country their target is hiding in.

The How to Protect Yourself section doesn’t provide instructions on how to protect yourself. I guess there really isn’t a way to protect yourself if you use those services, correct? The best thing you could do is prohibit notifications and only open communication from people you trust. That seems quite limiting and keeps your vulnerability in the control of anyone that messages you anyway. The only effective way to protect yourself is to not use any communication services at all, which would then make activists and journalists ineffective.

Oof, get ready for the backlash. I think that in summary, what you’re going to receive is anger about the belief that a group of people based on ethnicity/nationality can expel or eradicate another group from their lands because the initial group supposedly used to live there millennia ago and experienced a recent genocide attempt elsewhere. From the perspective of an outsider, it seems like one group of people (i.e. Jewish) believe they can and have the mandate to genocide another group that had nothing to do with the genocide to avoid their own genocide that is no longer a threat. Imagine if Native Americans started genociding European Americans rn, particularly bombing schools and hospitals. That’s what it would look like, except the Native Americans were here for millennia, were dominant much more recently depending on the specific location, and suffered a much much more extensive genocide over centuries.

Basically, the universal moral code that is being violated is that no one no matter what has the right to genocide anyone. There is no exception to that rule. Not culture, ethnicity, religion, or even genocide. In fact, it seems hypocritical to commit the genocide of a group of people that had absolutely nothing to do with the initial genocide while claiming that genocide is horrible. It’s like saying, “John killed my child, so I get to kill Jenny’s child.” What?? No, you don’t get to kill anyone.
