No one has ever gone bankrupt overestimating the racism and sexism of the American people.
Too many factors to say that was the cause, but we can’t rule it out. Remember that Ruby Bridges is 8 years younger than Trump. We are so close to the time when the majority of Americans were openly, proudly, racist, the idea that a significant number of Americans are quietly racist is not far fetched in the least.

Sure, it’s not (very) illegal to offer the rest of the candidates cabinet positions to drop out, so that you can 1v1 the progressive and prevent the him from winning the way Trump did. But “we’re a private entity and can pick the nominee however we want” will not exactly endear you to your base, or give them very much respect for the primary process.
I assume you mean you have more power if you live in Iowa, New Hampshire or South Carolina. If your state votes after “super Tuesday” things will be pretty decided before you have a chance to weigh in.
As a leftist, I feel pretty unrepresented by the Democrats. “Vote in the primaries then support whoever is the nominee” would feel a lot more palatable if I wasn’t so sure the DNC will do everything they can to prevent a progressive from getting nominated.

Ignoring Fox and the crazies for a moment, how often have mainstream networks given equal time to climate change deniers and actual scientists, pretending there was a debate where there wasn’t one.
I want to push back a little on “we all agreed on what was and what was not reality.” When there were three TV stations, did any of them highlight police brutality? Overincarceration? The military industrial complex? Anything that would hurt their sponsor’s bottom lines?
The news networks we have today are all owned by large media conglomerates. They range from pro-corporate to pro-fascist. I’m glad that there are enough independent voices that we can hear from people who don’t profit off of the status quo. It’s unfortunate that right wing media is so prevalent and well funded, but if there is an answer to that, it’s not going back to the days when Walter Cronkite, CBS, and Gulf+Western would tell us “That’s the way it is”.

I would only torrent with a VPN and a private tracker. It’s certainly not difficult to learn, but absolutely requires some small amount of information to acquire.
The signal to noise ratio is so low these days. There’s so much information out there but everyone wants to profit from you before you can get it. Even worse, the people with good information generally can’t buy as big a megaphone as the people who profit from lying to you.
Honestly, I think humans have been more likely to believe an easy lie than a hard truth all along, but it’s easier than ever these days.
I suspect it would be difficult to generate enough data to intentionally change a dataset. There are certainly little holes, like the glue pizza thing, but finding and exploiting them would be difficult and noticing you and blocking you as a data source would be easy.
