  • All well and good, I just highly doubt it is common knowledge that the US, a country with a much larger population and much more hospitable growing conditions than ours, apparently grows no mustard seed for all the mustard they produce for both countries. French’s goes out of their way to note their use of Canadian ingredients on their bottles, likely as a result of our last little go round with the US. We could really stand to see more of that right now, since our supply chains are so intertwined. With a lot of products, we have to choose what combination of Canadian ownership, manufacturing, or parts/ingredients, if any, that we’re willing to accept. Knowing at a glance is a pretty big advantage. Wish we’d get some help from more stores on that front.

  • Yeah, they announced Friday there was almost 72M left in the fund, so apparently they sold 16K cars this weekend and ran it dry. Except with the cancellation today, dealerships are being told that unless the car was delivered before the announcement, those people aren’t getting the credit. Since you usually don’t drive away in your car on the day you buy it, it sounds like lots of awkward calls are going out today. TC says they will dole out the remainder on a first come first serve basis, so some may get ot and others won’t. I wonder what happens to the money for those who still go through with their weekend purchase without the bonus. Huge windfall for the dealers when they get the rebate and don’t tell their customers?

  • That site looks like it is trying to go for the average job listing, which is probably listing the minimum starting pay for the minimum qualification level. And I still can’t find a single board that pays that little. The average teacher is likely starting as an A3, since it is hard to get into teacher’s college without high grades and a four year undergrad with honours. At any rate, 41K is a gross underrepresentation of average teacher pay.

Here’s a pay grid for Toronto (which is not the best paying board) that only goes up to 2021. An A3 started at 56,302. That number will vary maybe up to a couple thousand anywhere in Ontario depending on the board. Your average teacher though has probably been in for closer to 10 or 15 years and is probably A4 unless they did no further education. They make around 100K.

  • Typically when you are moving debt to a credit card, you are not making a purchase, but are withdrawing cash from the credit account to pay for the LOC. A cash advance usually means you are paying interest on the amount withdrawn immediately at super high credit card rates. There is usually no grace period given for cash advances. IIRC, the cash balance is tracked separately from your regular card balance, and payments first go to paying off the normal monthly balance, and when that hits zero, they go towards the cash advance balance. That keeps you paying high interest for longer if you can’t pay it off in full. You’d have to read your terms of service to confirm how your card handles this. Be careful to make sure you understand your terms.

There are frequently special balance transfer offerings issued by card companies that allow you to transfer your credit balance from one card to another for a fixed initial cost (3% of balance seems normal now), and then you get up to 12 months at 0% interest. That can be a pretty good deal, but you would have to confirm if you could do a cash advance on one card, then balance transfer to a second one using a promotional offer and make sure the second card doesn’t still treat it as a cash advance balance, which would likely be subject to immediate high interest rates. This is probably the most likely scenario. However, if you can confirm they treat the transferred balance as normal, it would end up being cheaper than a year at LOC interest. Then you pay it off in full with the LOC and repeat, assuming you get another offer. I think it is more likely banks will look out for each other and that won’t work for cash advance credit card debt, but hey, maybe there are banks that just want your business and only a little cash instead of a lot.
