  • They seem to be narrowing it down in the original thread. When I feel more sure there’s a consensus, I’ll add an update above and tag anyone who guessed a species.

Btw, I’m a bit disappointed that this little game of sorts isn’t getting more interest here so far, but oh well. To each, their own.

    Anyway, matey,
thank you for weighing in on my little steal-post. :P

Now IIRC you live near… I dunno, a forested area perhaps in which you can see and hear local owls? Is that right, and if so may I ask how many species you’ve come across? <3

  • As we’ve settled in here, it feels we’ve lost much of that and many have fallen back to those old habits of just letting opinions fly at each other, and we’ve got more arguing than cooperation.

I mean, that part is totally normal IME, but it also highlights how most users tend to think of a free service as just something to be taken advantage of, which admittedly makes a certain sense… up until a point.

IMO the biggest thing reddit-to-lemmy users missed is that they failed to conceive that content-creation is not necessarily automatic, and that it was pretty-much up to them to ‘do their part.’ Again, not all that surprising in the age of community BBS’s to social media, but I guess like you, I’d hoped that there’d be more of a communal awareness & effort against the dangers of big business capturing social media, as it’s done.

If we could approach more threads calmly like this, I’d be so much happier.

Generally I’m in agreement, but I must confess a certain appreciation for a good mix-it-up argument, gloves-off (but still with a politness), hopefully learning where and how I might have been wrong. Seriously, I think it’s because we naked apes tend to be stung so hard by being shown exactly where we’re wrong, that such can actually be a great teaching tool, much more effective than various other methods, par example.

Altho yeah… I’m not sure if such an approach is best for the whole lot of us advanced monkeys. 😂

…you have a more youthful character to me!

It would take a minute to properly explain my rando character, but if it makes sense, I have CFS/ME, which caused me to grow up as if was a refugee from the moon. Simply put-- much of my life has involved living in major frustration, waving goodbye to the things my colleagues and friends were able to dabble in, such as specialised career-learning, pursuing such a career all my working life, being able to keep up with a romantic partner, starting a family, and enjoying the fruits of a well-lived life. So in the face of all that, I felt like I had to come up with a variety of wild improvisation in order to… find my niche, I guess. (again, long complicated story)

That said, I sincerely apologise if my sometimes wild, youthful remarks hurt you or others. Despite the above, I am certainly not here to abuse or be mean towards others if I can help it. Indeed, maintaining awareness of my dumbass self is pretty much in my top-three of self-awareness, haha.

My real life is about 50/50 good and bad now, so I’ve been trying to jump between worlds" between people here and IRL, but it’s become a bit more challenging for me recently.

Damn, sorry to hear that, matey. :S

So far I’ve appreciated messaging with you, altho I can be (naturally) slow to respond at times, given my condition. Still, feel free…!

Ooh ooh, and I finally got around to posting that ‘mystery owl’ post I’d mentioned last week. ^^

Ah, I think I see what you’re saying.

Myself, I was joyful to discover the Fediverse at one point, being utterly disgusted with Reddit’s management (ala the summer of 2023 crackdowns), and thinking that most people here would automagically share a sort of ‘uplifting, positive mindset.’ Sadly, the same old behavior that I’ve seen online since the late 80’s (yes, I’m old) was still in full effect, so unfortunately (IMO) there’ll always be abusers, exploiters and bad actors upon a system, even given the most utopian system imaginable.

Bottom line to me is that we’re not living in our natural state anymore (long story), and that such disaster tends to stress us out and mess with us in various ways, up to and including making bad decisions and lashing out upon each other. Indeed, I wish I could say that I was some ‘noble’ kind of person, but I consider myself just as much of an idiot and asshole as the rest of the flock.

Still though-- there’s a sort of ‘release’ upon realising and accepting these things. I’m no saint of course, but understanding and accepting that reality makes me feel kinder and more open to people, and more open to just plain reality in general.

I try to be here as a relief to you all from it, but sometimes that’s makes it hard for me, not feeling I have a place to go.

Well, your wonderful posts are certainly a relief and bosom, source of life to us all, I think.

And you always have a place to go with friends, like me and whoever else you got.

  • Oh, shoot, sorry, what’s up with that?

I mean… I hope we can all understand the sheer frustration upon the insane US election result, right? But… are you thinking that it’s specifically worse than that…? I mean, floof man, let’s just get back to owls, if so…?

  • I was indeed a bit playful, my friend. Possibly even sarcastic.
I’m not sure, really; because sometimes the meaning bursts out, looking to reconcile its own meaning.

If it helps, I’m normally pretty chill about stuff, but what just happened in LaLaLand is akin to jumping right in to a volcano, i.e. kerplonk and sizzle.

Make of that what you will, if you like.

  • Hmm, nice stuff; thanks for sharing! I guess my biggest issues with using the IA is that it’s pretty slow, which is probably not a good combination for hotlinking about six images at a pop, up to a meg each, for dozens of offsite viewers at a time. I strongly suspect that it could be pretty pokey given those factors.

The IA of course is also a hot target by IP holders, and has gone down at times, and really, could vanish entirely at any point given the circumstances.

images uploaded to Imgur expire after a certain amount of time or if they get no views after a certain amount of time.

Actually I’ve had stuff that I uploaded privately ~10yrs ago that’s still up on Imgur, and I’ve had some public posts that got traction at the time deleted after only ~8mos or so, plus other combinations of those factors, including file size issues. Right now it’s pretty baffling trying to understand their method, and I would guess it’s more of just some internal issue relative to Imgur, for example, maybe they just say ‘this data bank is having issues, so let’s migrate the paid content, delete the rest, and retire the data bank, replacing it with newer hardware.’ Something like that, anyway…
