I used to not understand how people could spend so much money on a single meal at a really fancy restaurant.
But then, on a special occasion my wife convinced me to go to a Michelin star restaurant. It was amazing, honestly the best “food experience” I’ve ever had, so many crazy flavours, etc etc.
So now, i can understand why someone might go to a very fancy restaurant once or twice a year. I probably still won’t, but I do understand why someone would.

why are there fans of operating systems in the first place
Operating systems are huge endeavours of engineering and design by entire teams of people over decades, which are used literally daily. Is that not enough of a reason for people to be fans of them?

My wife (then gf) and I moved in to the current apartment when we were ~25 (we are now almost 30). We made little notes introducing ourselves for all the neighbours, and one couple responded by bringing us a bottle of wine as a gift. We ended up friends with them, playing board games, video games, D&D, and the occasional party. We dont hang out consistently, but its nice to have friends in the building.
For some reason it bothers me greatly when people talk about the number 2 being special because “it’s the only even prime number”. Like of course, that’s literally how they are defined. It’s like saying “did you know 3 is the only prime number divisible by 3?”
I support the abolishment of prisons (at least as we know them), but I don’t think this is a fair or convincing comparison. Prisons are a failed attempt to solve a real problem (what to do with people who break the rules), which is what people are concerned about. In an ideal society it will be replaced by something (rehabilitation?). Slavery solved no problem, and so needed nothing to replace it.
Climbing is great, because people tend to be friendly, and also competitive. But not competitive against each other, but rather against their own projects/goals. Makes for a super inclusive and comfortable social scene.

I can definitely empathise with the lack of trust in democracy. I’m holding out some hope that things might change once a newer generation starts to take office, but we will see.
But this failing of democracy just makes it seem all the more important that we as a people try to resist the divisiveness of modern politics and media, as that seems to be a common tool of control used by those in power.
I learnt the German word “geil” from context to mean something like “awesome” or " really good".
At some point I went to some mega fancy restaurant, like dressed up fancy and everything. The waiter asks how the entrees were, and I respond “geil”. My wife burst out laughing and later explains to me that while “geil” is used to mean “awesome”, it’s very much slang and actually means “horny”.
