  • Basically any military surplus store really. Online stores all tend to have very aligned pricing so but you cannot inspect the (used) item for issues, sizing, stains or damage, etc so I’d recommend finding your local military surplus store - just recognize that you’re thrifting not shopping. Not everything is available, nor worth having necessarily, and it’s commonly been worked hard and not cared for before it found its way to the shelf.

If you want to roll the dice and get some serious deals, there’s usually a liquidator or auction website for your local PD and/or government to offload their outdated but workable gear and tech. But they usually have very particular rules around shipping and pickup, you arrange all that on your own.

    1. Patent pool

The AR market is not just entertainment, Microsoft has been failing to build a viable AR helmet for soldiers for years now, after the latest-and-greatest fight jets got them.

Professional use too - think of how much simpler and safer ‘realistic’ training could be for deep sea commercial divers or oil rig workers. Live schematic overlays for aircraft technicians at work/in training.

Those are a few of the applications where an absurdly high unit cost/license fee would be gladly swallowed instead by governments or business.

Drinking water to dilute your blood alcohol content is really the only reliable method - but there’s a companion method that actually works. Meet dihydromyricetin

The increased level of alcohol-induced liver ALDH activity by treatment with H. dulcis extracts suggests that H. dulcis can effectively relieve the alcohol hangover through enhancing the catabolism of ethanol.

  • Nah. Even with a the correctly sized bit on a manual screwdriver it’s a pain. One hand drives the tool, the second is playing hand twister trying to ensure perfect axial alignment of the tool:fastener:workpiece interface. Plus it is terrible at ‘holding’ fasteners in place on the bit before insertion, even Phillips heads are okay at that when not magnetized.

Unless you physically cannot fit a more complex head geometry on the fastener because it’s super small, we have better options nowadays.

  • I work in manufacturing supply chain and tbh it may actually be better to buy direct from the factory via Aliexpress than the same thing that’s already been imported.

Because of our “gimme it now” consumer attitude and shit like Prime last mile expedited delivery, the only way to ensure that service (as a corporate distribution strategy) is to overbuy and disseminate finished product geographically - the goal should be Just in Time restocking to each local warehouse/distro hub, but after the pandemic supply crunch we literally re-wrote the textbook and businesses are holding more inventory than before.

And the “locally made with global materials” manufacturing is even worse. Any scrap/waste during production represent materials that were likely transported via sea freight using bunker fuel, and the snowballing volume of intermodal packaging required to ship raw/semifinished material instead of a finished product adds up QUICK.

The real answer? Buy nothing; Thrift, Rent/Borrow. And if you have no alternative, seriously consider spending more on durable goods that’ll last instead of the cheaper or fancy whiz-bang option. DIY is for hobbies, you can’t beat economies of scale and efficiency unless it’s something very basic or simple.

  • I found a real easy approach to any undesired solicitation - zero contact, no reaction. Works on telemarketers, panhandlers, salespeople etc.

I have no shame about ghosting you publicly when the only thing you’re after is my money. If I’m in the home generator store, sure thing bro talk to me about my home power needs. If I’m walking out the supermarket and you slide around a booth to “help me keep my home safe during unrest” nah fam you can fuck yourself.

Cold open sales is parallel to pick-up “artists” imo. You want the transactional outcome for yourself, and my consent is the only thing you’re concerned about taking care of.
