I was there when it happened. At the time we recognized it as the force that was going to (and did) ruin USENET (and IRC). We did not recognize it as the force that would also ruin the entire world.

The iPhone came out in 2007. That was the year the worm turned, imo.
I don’t think this is legit because even as I was reading it, I was expecting it to sound a lot worse than it ended up sounding. Like, it didn’t sound great or anything, but it didn’t sound nearly as fucked up as I would expect firsthand descriptions of piled-on legacy code to sound after almost 50 fucking years.
You’ve got the right idea, that video is spot on. I quit software for “work” in 2010 and moved to a job working for myself (self directed) doing work that I felt mattered (purpose driven) and that was work that required constant self improvement, both mental and physical (mastery). I’m no longer behind a desk, I meet new people every day and I am much happier. I also write more software now than I ever did at “work,” because I write software with the express intent of supporting my self-employment endeavors - and not for anybody else.

You know, I never thought I would be praising Fallout for its prescience in predicting the future.
There likely needs to be a very public message sent out to these billionaires along the lines of “stay in your lane… or else.” The kind of incontrovertible message that everyone will understand when they see it. But it’s probable that they’ve already got a similar (albeit conflicting) message from some other… billionaires that specialize in that art whose name ends in “estration.”
Seven vegetable soup with a half a cup of black beans added, some grated parmesan and whatever hot sauce I am feeling at the moment. It never gets old.
They’re so great. Hash brown patties, like a dozen for $6. I swear, they’re as good as McDonalds which are like $3 apiece now.
Interesting all this WP news I’m hearing today. Last week I downloaded the entirety of Wikipedia. Anyone can do it, the base archive (no pictures) is only about 25G, although the torrent is slow AF, took me… almost 2 weeks to download it.
I did this because I feel like this might be the last chance to get a version of it that has any vestige of the old order in it, the old order being “trying to stick to ideals and express truth rather than rewriting history to the fascists’ specifications.”
I’d love to be wrong, but if I’m not, I feel like it will potentially be a good reference in the future if needed.
July 4, 2012. The day the Higgs Boson was discovered. Everything since has done nothing but get stranger and stranger. I won’t even say it’s all just gone to shit. It’s just to me, everything since has been… increasingly unreal.
I have… lots of media available on a local Plex server, several thousand movies and tv shows, continuously growing, never getting smaller - more than you can say for streaming services. I have an OTA DVR for local stations so I can watch sports on the weekend and maybe some PBS content. I pay $0/mo for all of it.
I mean, they knew. They named it the Star TAC after all.
Translation: I did whatever the fuck I wanted to do and now I’ve worked out that I was a shithead. It therefore follows that it was these external things that made me a shithead. Nevermind that countless other people have experienced the same things as “essentially harmless fun.” I, of course (having been a raging shithead) am in a position to know better.
The logic is flawless.
Only God may judge us? Which God exactly, you giant fucking DIPSHIT?
If you have ever had a dream where you can’t get something right. Like, in your dream you know you need to do something - you even know exactly what it is that you need to do. You have no excuse for not doing it - maybe you actually try to do it - and yet you keep finding it is as yet undone.
You eventually wake up, because you are alive and you are dreaming. But if you are dead, you are not alive, you cannot wake up. You have all of the agency that you had when you were dreaming, which is none. Until you woke up - you were helpless in your dream, try as you might. The dead are helpless in their dream as well, but they do not have the luxury of waking up.
So have some pity for the dead.
It’s not like Reddit stopped existing. Lemmy will (hopefully) never be Reddit. That means that some itches Reddit will still have to scratch.
