As far as ways to filter for such positions, maybe look for roles that require traveling? At the very least, you’d be in a different location throughout your week.

By this logic, the less predictable your daily life is, the more “alive” you are.

So for a lot of us, to be “alive” is to experience constant anxiety about what’s about to happen.

It’s also worth noting that at the time, Samaritans were seen as an enemy. “To the Jews, a Samaritan was more revolting than a Gentile (pagan); Samaritans were half-breeds who defiled the true religion.”

So when it was written that a good Samaritan was an example of a neighbor, it was more impactful than the phrase implies today. Part of the point was to say that even those perceived as “enemies” are ordinary people that should be treated with the same dignity and care given to one’s own tribe.

Pretty much all of the above. Sometimes it was a silly comment or argument that didn’t quite make sense. Sometimes it was like, “what are you trying to say?” but specifically asking for one’s reasoning helps clarify things.

I still might ask it some time, but I’ve found the environment here to be more hostile to rational thought than I’d originally expected… which was a sad discovery. A lot of people seem to react without first comprehending what they’re reading.

At first I lurked on my boyfriend’s account. We had both left Reddit during the API debacle, but I wasn’t ready to rejoin social media yet, so he hopped on Lemmy first.

But as he shared links and news and memes with me, and I scrolled the comments, I started wanting to participate. The first few times I felt drawn to comment (but didn’t yet), I wanted to ask people what the reasoning was behind their thoughts. That stuff is interesting to me.

So when I finally sat down and made an account for myself, it was the first thought in my head. I haven’t found myself asking anybody about their reasoning since then, but I still like the name.

I imagine that phenomenon is similar to how super sheltered kids become the wildest teenagers/young adults (whichever age they are when they first get a taste of freedom.) Like how people with newfound freedom often party hard with it, people who’ve never been in a position of power before can easily take their new authority too far.

Totally not excusing it. It’s not some inevitable “human nature” thing. There are good parents, teachers, and others in positions of authority that take their responsibility to others seriously. They’re the ones that allow some modicum of function in society.

But those who seek power for its own sake are going to be ruthless about it. Then once someone has power, it’s extremely difficult for them to let it go.

Autocorrected spelling helps with a lot, but it doesn’t help with run-on sentences that lack punctuation. Nobody’s expecting punctuation like an English teacher, but when you have to re-read a comment several times to make any sense of it, that’s simply poor communication.

Social media rises and falls just like any other fad or fashion. It’s a never-ending churn, as people (particularly, young people) inevitably crave something novel. There’s little use in fighting the cycle, just as there’d be little use in fighting the trendy choices of a teenager.

It’s frustrating to watch people en masse continue to make choices that don’t make sense. It turns out that a lot of people are much more driven to follow the crowd than to have (let alone stand by) personal principles or rational decisions. Thankfully, we’re not obligated to be like that. There’s always some sort of counter-culture that bucks the main trends, and honestly? That’s where the most interesting people tend to be.

If you feel driven to educate people on the futility of trends, then by all means, go for it. I just know it can be draining, and not everyone is going to be receptive. On the plus side, you sound like a rational person who actually thinks about their decisions - in a world full of followers, that can be pretty powerful.

Sentences, man. Run-on sentences make people’s heads hurt. I eventually got your message, but without reasonable punctuation, most readers just see a jumble of loosely-connected words.

To be fair, it’s really hard to tell what you were saying. It took a few re-reads to parse your comment into something that makes sense.

Good, I’m glad for him. With the upcoming tariffs/trade war coming our way, I can only imagine how much higher the cost of living in Hawaii is about to get.

I made a Twitter account in the early days when I was a teenager. The sole reason I made it was because one of my favorite bands had an account. Their posts would be sent in an SMS to my phone, and the cool thing about that was how it felt like they were texting me personally.

I have no idea when I last logged in, let alone when I last posted. When the SMS feature was dropped, so did my interest.

Some people in the complaints believed they were talking directly with Musk, a sadly common story that has popped up in news reports before.

I remember when I thought I was talking directly to a celebrity online… when I was 13. It didn’t take long to realize how stupid that idea was. To be a grown adult and still think there’s a chance a celebrity is sending messages to random people is mind-boggling.

I cringe at the memories now, but at least I can take comfort in having learned about catfishing long before I had money to lose from it.

It’s all cyclical anyway. No social media company will reign forever. We’ve already seen a number of them rise and fall. It’s kinda like how different civilizations gained and lost dominance throughout history.
