honestly the distro doesn’t matter so much as long as the hardware i supported. run a minimal desktop, disable CPU hogs and file indexing etc.
I used fvwm on Debian for many years on old computers. worked great. now I have kde/plasma on arch. my 10 year old laptop handles it fine…

I know a little about the academic system. it’s not an easy market to succeed in. but if you do it’s a wonderful life. you’re free to work on problems you find interesting, without worrying about whether or not they are profitable.
sounds like you genuinely love doing research in math, given that you put in a lot of time and voluntarily turned down a cushy job.
my suggestion is to put your nose to the grindstone and pass your quals. it’s not easy and not everyone makes it… but it sounds like the path to the career you want is this way.
you should especially do this on Friday 5:00pm in production, right before going on an international vacation with bad Internet.

here are a few ideas I had:
i used to use zfs for backups via snapshots. but I find using rsync and hard links is much more convenient. i can use standard tools to look through backups and track which files changed if needed.
why do you want to make the switch?
if I was billionaire rich, I would buy companies that provide essential services and make them non profits.
buy useful tech services and convert them to non profits without advertising. e. g. YouTube etc.
lobby to ensure environment protection laws are made to protect the environment and not profits.
stop government subsidies on anything that’s bad for the environment. meat. fossil fuels.
it also means don’t risk everything you have for a somewhat opaque promise of something better
