Thank you for the rec. I checked them out, but it’s not really what I’m looking for. Ideally my watch face will let me see a lot of information related to location and weather. For example, my main Apple Watch face currently shows: a compass, date, time, current temp, the high, the low, the conditions, wind speed and elevation. That’s partly why I’ve stuck with an Apple Watch despite the severe shortcomings
I was looking into Pebble watches right before they got bought by Fitbit, was super bummed. Since then I’ve tried a Garmin (hated the app) and now on my third Apple Watch… I still don’t love the Apple Watch and want an alternative. Between having to charge it all the goddamn time and after 10~ years it only having 3 usable watch faces I’ve been craving an alt. I signed up for the Pebble list - I’m ready. Pebble for every day and going to try out a Coros for fitness.
hype isn’t based on anything tangible
So just like crypto
EDIT: The crypto bros out in full force… and right on cue proudly proclaiming they don’t understand the difference between the value of blockchain technology (which so far has not had a ton of real world value outside of mostly impractical database applications, other than furthering climate change and buying drugs) vs the SPECULATIVE value of coins since coins have no real value factors to back up their SPECULATIVE value. Stocks often have real value that back up their value, like company profits or products. Stop drinking kool aid to the point of literal zero critical thinking, jfc.
Some report said the claim of organized theft was not true or greatly exaggerated
Thanks for the encouragement. Fortunately it’s not needed for me at this point in my life, but I think maybe the circumstances of how/when that behavior is needed has been lost on the crowd here and unfortunately for far too many people in general. I don’t push down my emotions and ignore them and I don’t advocate for that because it’s unhealthy - but what I do advocate for is not soaking in a bathtub of my own misery for weeks like I used to do in high school/college/early post-college. Going out and doing something else to distract instead of wallowing has had a great effect on my life, has allowed me to work through some of my personal issues from gaining new experiences/perspective and I feel extraordinarily better for having forced myself out of my comfort zone and experiencing more of what life has to offer. Laying around and soaking in the misery allows your emotional/mental muscles to atrophy whereas pushing yourself helps create inner strength. I’ve gone from an emotional and suicidal wreck to being pretty happy… without medications or “finding any gods”. Just regular activity, eating well, socializing and exercise. Overall, I’m happy and it’s in a way I did not know possible 10+ years ago.
This is my personal opinion, but overall I think the concept of maintaining mental and emotional health, especially within millennials and gen z, has morphed into something that’s incredibly unhealthy as the “wellness and self help” sector has become more profitable via capitalist vultures, where many have decided wearing emotions on sleeves at all times and basking in their personal sorrow and anger while refusing to make any life changes is totally reasonable and okay instead of actually aiming to feel better or change - and making any “change” comes down to simply altering a medication. I feel this way based on three things: 1) a drastic increase in memes that glorify refusing to go out, grandstand on feeling bad and constantly joke about pushing others away socially. 2) People I know who get sad and then just disappear for 2 months, refusing to text, accept hang outs, etc. 3) I’ve overheard people discussing and comparing the number of times they meditate per week like it’s a competition… which misses the point of meditation entirely and comes off as more of a westernized “productivity” thing than a healthy, healing activity or lifestyle.
Somehow wallowing in misery, hating everything and everyone and disengaging from life has become a huge money machine in the US and I feel too many people are hellbent on propping up that industry culturally. It’s gross and I’m exhausted by it.
Sorry for the vent, just been seeing too many “it’s okay to be unsocial and hate others and do nothing with your life” memes and seeing too many friends waste away lately and needed to get it out.
There’s also a broader definition of “fake it til you make it” that somewhat impacts the thought: I don’t really use it in the context of work or my career, but instead when I’m having an emotionally turbulent time and I need to push through feeling bad by faking feeling good to finally start feeling better.
You could just not share every little scrap of your mundane lives
We agree on that and I find people who do that really annoying -often muting them-, but that’s not really how I use Instagram for myself. I use Instagram to post vacation photos or to share some unusual life news, maybe four or five times a year and that’s about it with posting. I just checked and I posted 3 times in 2024 and 9 in 2023, all vacations, death of a pet or moving news - All worthy of sharing with friends, imo. Otherwise, my main use case for Insta is to track things locally, like restaurants, bars, clubs, shows, events, etc. Unfortunately there’s not a better alternative for that sort of use case in another app right now. It’s a bummer because I would love to move off of social media and use an alternative, but local stuff can’t be accessed by things like RSS feeds and lots of businesses don’t really do newsletters anymore - or in some cases don’t even bother with websites.
There are a lot of people circlejerking in this thread about not using social media and patting themselves on the back, but people who like to go outside their house and who want and actually try to keep in touch with friends can find it pretty useful. Also, Lemmy and forums are practically social media - so stop being so hypocritical with your reality warped dissonance. I see too much of that already on Instagram and reddit.
I try not to be the guy standing on the corner with the “THE END IS NEAR” sign
Same. At this point I’m exhausted though. I don’t see a way through and people have proven themselves far too stupid and susceptible to misinformation for there to be a way. A few people I know whom I used to think were fairly smart have even fallen prey to some clearly wrong misinformation on something as simple as birth control and have actively shown distrust toward multiple medical professionals. Simply no energy left to fight against the tide of stupification. We’re cooked
Americans were still stupid enough to elect the do-nothing party.
Yeah disinformation and social media slop has diminished the little confidence I had that America could turn it around. It’s over and we are simply running out the clock, imo. Even if we are able to slice off the Republican fascist hydra head the climate change head will have grown too powerful at that point and devour us all

There was some groaning but, if there’s no other way, either use Signal or invest in a Pigeon coop and get training.
Any particular reason you are abandoning SMS? Any particular reason for the strict rule?
Mozilla needs to ditch their CEO and maybe even their board. They’ve lost their way all because the leadership is greedy
Thanks - I hadn’t heard of this before, but my Macbook seems to predate the chip according to those dates.
Oh wow, I truly appreciate that share. This is the level of detail I was hoping for :D
I had not looked into that but the MBP I want to install Linux on is truly an extra laptop. I get a laptop refresh every 3 or so years from work and get to keep the old one, so at this point I have 2 former work computers so I want to try out the install for the experience. Otherwise I’d just consider recycling it at this point.
The adults sold us a future they were determined to destroy before it could ever come to fruition.
This does not excuse having a power button on the bottom, thats just ridiculous.
Asking in earnest, but why is a power button on the bottom so egregious? I’ve owned various Macbooks over the last decade and I rarely use the power button - and when I do in recent years it’s for TouchID. I leave my MBP open regularly, but have my battery settings set to automatically turn off the monitor and put the computer into sleep mode. I’m just not getting why it’s such a big deal and it’s mostly coming off as “grr apple bad, no like”
You seem very pissed off about absolutely nothing. Maybe a Mac just isn’t for you. Chill out and maybe log off for a bit
Yep - It was found in the frozen food section
