I looked into fixing it and it’ll cost almost $300. I refuse to spend any money to fix a stupid Samsung. So, my wife wants a new refrigerator made by an actual reputable appliance company, but I don’t want to spend $3000. So we just live without ice, and I anticipate this will be our life until the refrigerator stops working completely.

Yeah, usually you can remove the ice maker and. You’ll have the room for the ice trays and bucket, but who knows with these fancy new tech ridden appliances.
The ice maker is in the refrigerator, and definitely not removable. But I’m sure we could make room for a couple of ice trays in the freezer.

I have great success with these.
You fill the cup with water, add the lid over the sink so you catch the spill, and in the freezer it goes. Super easy to remove too.
My wife has those, but I need ice cubes so I can measure the weight of it going into the coffee (I use the Japanese pour over iced coffee method with a digital scale).
Maybe I’m misunderstanding, but couldn’t you use this item and pour the ice into a bowl before you add it to the coffee? Feels like it would solve the dripping water issue at the very least, and take up less space in the freezer as well

Unfortunately I’ve also tried a product similar to this but it was annoying because I always had to put something heavy on top to have the inner cup push down enough to make actual cubes. Maybe this one is better than the silicone trays I use now, maybe not.
My original comment was more poking fun at the fact I’m doing this since I moved to Los Angeles (an area of the country known for its technology) as an adult. I grew up with things like dishwashers, ice makers, central heating and cooling, and traffic lights that can be changed by emergency vehicles in my typical crappy state. It irks me that I have to manually restock the ice bin each day.

So, it’s basically a two part item. The mold is soft silicone that has a cube structure on the inside. The lid is hard plastic and has a hollow dent inside. You fill up the silicone mold and push the lid in, and the dent in the lid pushes the extra water out, so the water just stays in the part of the cube structure. When it is frozen, you take the lid out and squeeze the soft silicone part, and the ice cubes fall out in the middle. Sometimes there are tiny links between the ice cubes, but they are easily broken when you squeeze the mold.

In our fridge, the ice maker empties into a bucket that makes ice available outside the freezer door next to the water. The motor that turns the agitator in the ice bucket still works fine, so we can freeze ice in trays and then put it in the bucket and use the door like normal.
We could do that, but we don’t because even that is too much of a pain. We actually just take the ice directly from the tray when we need it.
There are a few repair guys who’ve made YouTube videos and they all say about the same thing. If the icemaker is in the door, it’s going to break. And the fancier, the refrigerator is the more costly the repair. A basic GE fridge with simple ice maker in the freezer will last. Just won’t look nice
Oh that’s good to know about door ice makers. This ice maker is actually a sealed compartment in the refrigerator, but it is supposed to dispense from the outside of the door. It has never worked since we got it. I tried to defrost it so I can open it and inspect it, but it beeped every 10 seconds for 15 minutes, and we eventually decided it was too aggravating to continue. Whoever made the decision to make it constantly beep while defrosting is an asshole.
That’s part of what they were getting at. Anytime you want to freeze something, it should be in the freezer. Attempting to over engineer a hack to put it in a warmer space sets it up to fail.
I’ll certainly remember that when it’s time to replace this one. Thank you. Hopefully that time is far away, because I don’t want to spend thousands of dollars when I don’t have to. I refuse to replace it with something equally shitty, so its replacement will be expensive.

In or around most major cities there are Habitat for Humanity and wholesale resell stores. Either one is a great source for cheap appliances. H4H helps to support a good cause with great deals on things and wholesale resell places are just a great deal for new stuff that retailers couldn’t sell but wanted to get rid of.
You will have to do some searching for the wholesale resell places, but when you find one it can be a gold mine for the thrifty that doesn’t want used stuff. New snowblowers, lawnmowers, big and small home appliances, tools, and various other things can be had for a fraction of their MSRP.

Yeah, that’s why I decided not to waste any time or money fixing it. It came with the house. The dishwasher was also Samsung, and we already replaced that because it didn’t clean the dishes. They’re a bad company.
They may make some really bad ones, but the ice maker that lurks inside my Samsung fridge’s drawer freezer has been solid so far, despite my best attempts to break it by using the ice bin for food storage.
Have the same brand. We just used ice trays for a while, while I made some attempts to repair (epoxy together) just the little broken part. Ultimately, I dropped the $300 and it’s been flawless since.
If you ask me, ice makers are just another thing to break, but my wife considers them essential.
There is no universe in which you have to pay $3000 for a new refrigerator. Not even a full size French door ice-and-water-on-the-door arrangement.
Don’t buy appliances from the big box hardware stores or Best Buy. Just don’t. These guys sell at full MSRP/list price all day, every day. I don’t care what their advertising says, you are not getting a “deal” there. Your town probably has an independent appliance dealer. Find it, and buy from them.
And yes, don’t replace your Samsung with another Samsung. Their appliances are consistently awful. LG or Whirlpool (or any of Whirlpool’s myriad sub brands) are probably your best bet for non-premium options.
I’ve had trouble with LG and despite their reported reliability I read that LG is one of the two top brands for refrigerators that can’t hold temperature in a year or two (Samsung was the other). Samsung is the absolute shittiest appliance brand. The previous owner went all Samsung and every appliance has some problem and we’ve already replaced most of them.
Someone else suggested Habitat for Humanity stores, so I’m going to try to find one of those when the time comes. Thanks for the advice though, that’ll be our second option.
I have a GE Opal Nugget ice maker, and it is wonderful! It sits on the counter, and takes up a lot of space, and we go through a lot of distilled water… but the ice is always perfect!
My wife bought a water distiller a few months ago for her clothes steamer, or something, I’m not really sure what she uses it for. Lol. But she fills it with a gallon of water and has a gallon of distilled water sometime later. You guys could probably benefit from that.

It costs $75 to DIY. Buy a new ice maker on amazon, it takes about 15 minutes to install if you know what you are doing. I have the same horrible predicament with my Samsung fridge and replace the ice maker every year, as the replacements will also break. It’s still cheaper than a new fridge but ridiculous
The YouTube videos that I watched said it’s around $285 in parts, and those were already years old when I watched them. It’s the kind with a sealed box inside of the refrigerator that feeds into a dispenser on the outside of the door. I can’t even get the thing open because it’s frozen shut. I tried to defrost it and it beeped every 10 seconds for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes I couldn’t stand it anymore and stopped the defrost process. I guess I could start it up before I leave the house or something, but idk, if there’s a heating coil involved then that might not be safe with a malfunctioning appliance.
it takes a few defrost cycles to get the old one out. The first time I did it I bought a kit from Parts Dr which replace the board, the ice maker, and other components and that does seem to be $300 now. That lasted for a year and now every year or so I get just a new ice maker off Amazon, the one I last purchased currently is $100. I’m not sure if doing the whole replacement the first time around helped or not.

The “Ice Master” ice maker in my Samsung RF28K9380SR broke about a year after I bought it. I removed the moving parts of the ice maker component and just left it that way. There’s constant ice buildup on the remaining cooling rod, but I can easily defrost that with a steam wand twice a year.
We got a countertop ice maker to make the ice and then store it in the tray where the ice used to go. Not ideal, but it works. Needless to say, I won’t be buying a Samsung fridge again.
Every person that has replied here says they break in a year. I just want to point out what a terrible company they are to sell appliances that last a year.

We decided a while back as a family that we will have no Samsung products of any kind in our house. We used to have a shitty fridge and a shitty washer and dryer that I am glad are gone. Although now that I’m writing this comment I am pretty sure there are a few SSDs. Don’t tell anybody.
Same here. Other than a couple hard drives we will not have Samsung products anymore when the fridge kicks the bucket. I used to like them, but they’ve tried so hard to be a shitty spying ad company that I don’t want anything to do with them anymore.

We have an LG OLED. We felt like it more accurately reproduces colors, plus it’s like 1/2" thick, which is just amazing. It looks nice on the entertainment center, and the picture quality is outstanding.
